ZIFA BULAWAYO JUNIORS LEAGUE PARTNERS THE CITY FATHERS
THE BULAWAYO WARDS TOURNAMENT The Bulawayo city council in partnership with the Bulawayo province Junior league have been involved in football development in all the 29 wards for the past two years. The objective being to try and take the kids from the street, bring them together and invite organizations that have youth programmes to come and teach our youths on various topics that will enhance their education on issues like HIV and Aids, circumcision and self help projects. These games started in 2010 where they ran concurrently with the world cup that was played in South Africa for the first time in Africa. The games were so successful that the council decided to make them an annual event. The 2011 edition was even bigger and better as it also included the girl child that was not included in the 2010 edition. The 2011 games saw 25 wards establishing girls teams that participated for the first time and the level of commitiment, dedication and skill that was exhibited by the girls really showed the hidden talent that this city has. The council went out of its way to kit all the ladies teams in all the wards, a development that has thrown a big challenge to the football fraternity to nature these girls that were under 16 last year. Looking at the zeal that these ladies had, I am sure if the women football authorities make a follow up and group these wards and form a wards league that will play football through -out the season other than waiting for the city council tournament. | BULAWAYO CITY COUNCIL |
The team that won the 2010 edition ward 9 (Mpopoma) was knocked out in the first round and the 2011 cup was won by ward 11 (Emakhandeni) while ward 22 (Nkulumane ) which coincidental is the home of his worship the mayor of Bulawayo Councilor T. Moyo were the winners in the girls catergory.
The games that ran under the theme Bulawayo Youths kick Out Aids was a great success from the first round as all the participants who were all under the age of sixteen were taught about the dangers of the killer disease before all the matches by a qualified aids peer educator.
The city fathers should be commended for investing heavily on the Bulawayo youths despite the challenges that the whole country is going through and we hope they will continue to do so because if we have no youths then there is no future.
